Most of the state and local affiliate groups of Mental Health America take on an advocacy role for the development of housing for persons with mental illness but have not become the primary drivers of housing expansion. Mental Health Association Oklahoma stands as the most prominent and successful exception, now serving as a certified nonprofit developer of housing and overseeing more than 1,500 housing units in Tulsa and another 150 in Oklahoma City.
