The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has designated the District of Columbia to be the first recipient of a “first‐of‐its‐kind” Medicaid demonstration project to expand treatment services to individuals diagnosed with serious mental illness (SMI) and/or serious emotional disturbance (SED). Additionally, the district can now receive Medicaid reimbursement for care provided in settings that qualify as institutions for mental disease (IMD).
