The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Aug. 15 approved a measure to create a national three‐digit phone number — similar to 911 for emergencies — for a national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline system. Support for the new number, 988, is part of a report the FCC sent to Congress recommending that the number will improve access for Americans in crisis. The report was mandated by the National Suicide Hotline Improvement Act of 2018.
