The discussion of how work requirements in state Medicaid programs would affect beneficiaries with serious mental illness has remained in something of a holding pattern in recent months since a federal judge invalidated a Kentucky Medicaid waiver that included a work mandate (see MHW , July 16 and July 2). However, at least one state has fired a legislative salvo against the federal government's guidance allowing states more leeway to impose work requirements as a condition of receiving Medicaid benefits.
