Johann Mendel (Gregor was the name given to him only later by his Augustinian order, Fig. [Figure 1. Drawing of Johann Gregor Mendel (1822 to 6 January ...]) was born on July 20, 1822 to an ethnic German family, Anton and Rosina Mendel (Fig. [Figure 2. Pedigree of Johann Gregor Mendel (*) and his great‐great‐grandnephew ...]), in Heinzendorf in the Austrian Empire at the Moravian‐Silesian border (now Hynčice, Czech Republic).
