Three types of index were tested which classified winter climates in relation to winter road maintenance activities. The indices were tested with data from December 1994, from one open, well‐exposed station which forms part of the Swedish Road Weather Information System. All three types of index gave different results when applied to the test period. The selection of the weather parameters in the index, as well as the definition of weather types, are considered important, since they control the number of severe weather conditions which are summed over a period of time. Another important controlling factor was found to be the character of the summation, i.e. whether it was on a daily basis or whether the summation was over severe weather situations.
