Observations from radar, satellite and conventional ground‐based sources are shown as evidence for the occurrence of a microburst during a severe thunderstorm at Farnborough, Hampshire, UK on 24 May 1989. The data are compared with published analyses of microbursts in the USA, and it is concluded that the microburst observed in the UK is comparable. A descriptive model of the evolution of the gust front and microburst is proposed.
