A programme to measure snow temperature profiles using thermistors with automatic data logging and telemetry is described for sites in the Cairngorm mountains, Scotland. The data for 1992/93 and 1993/94 are discussed in terms of snow metamorphic processes. Equilibrium forms and melt‐freeze dominate, but temperature gradients high enough to produce faceting can occur. These data have been utilised in the successful adaptation of the NXD (Nearest Day) avalanche forecasting model to the Northern Cairngorms.
