A faceted, metadata‐driven approach to e‐government information access is explored through the development of the FRED system. This paper describes first steps of this research, in which the quality of existing metadata in the Canadian context is examined, and the system framework is established. Future work will focus on mapping and supplementing existing metadata and evaluating the effectiveness of faceted information access in this domain.
