This case study explores how trained and untrained searchers interact with search features in a digital library. Thirty five trained and untrained searchers completed the experiment. The results indicate that the usage of the search modes is significantly associated with the participants' search training background. The study also suggests that the untrained participants prefer to accept the system's default search field and search results display format. The suggestions for improving the interaction design in IEEE Xplore digital library are proposed and future studies are addressed.
