The replicative production technology precision glass moulding becomes more important due to the increasing demand on complex optical lenses. A noble metal coating system deposited by MSIP‐PVD is used to protect the functional surface of the moulding die to increase tool lifetime and surface quality. The objective of this report is to characterise and qualify a pure iridium coating for the suitability as protection coating against glass sticking and wear in contact with different glasses. The coating was developed concerning mechanical properties and tested in a heating experiment in contact with six glasses. It was possible to deposit a metallic iridium coating with a hardness of (26.5 ± 3.6) GPa by verifying deposition temperature and gas contribution. It could be proved, that no visible interaction between coating and different low‐Tg glasses happened. Because of the high mechanical hardness and low reactivity with different low‐Tg glasses an iridium coating is a promising protection coating for precision glass moulding application.
