The motivation for the application of Al/Mg compounds is to achieve significant progress towards lightweight structures. However, they are not used frequently because of the high corrosion susceptibility of magnesium. For this reason, knowledge of the corrosion behavior and the protection against corrosion are essential for the safe use in the component. This article contains results concerning the corrosion characteristics of the unprotected and the plasma‐electrolytically anodized Al/Mg compound. At the same time, the usefulness of microelectrochemical corrosion studies is demonstrated, given that it is possible to check coatings with regard to their permeability due to the high sensitivity of this method. It was found that the coating significantly enhances the corrosion resistance.
