Abstract The management of distortion remains to be one of the crucial factors in economic production of today. Nowadays common understanding is that the causes of distortion are spread over the entire manufacturing chain, each production step contributing to the final dimensional changes. The Collaborative Research Center “Distortion Engineering”, funded by the German Research Association (DFG) developed the methodology of Distortion Engineering. Starting from the distortion mechanisms, so‐called “carriers of distortion potential” allow describing the accumulation of dimensional changes along the process chain. Finally compensation potentials can be used to actively correct distortion characteristics and to minimize distortion. The presented paper, by taking into account economical criteria, will discuss the maturity of this concept. Opportunities to already introduce Distortion Engineering in actual production chains will be pointed out and future research work necessary will be addressed.
