A wide ranging overview of fatigue problems in railway applications is presented. Concentration is focussed on fatigue problems specific to the railway industry, that is, those at or adjacent to the wheel‐rail interface. Consideration of wheels and rails leads to a discussion of the importance of dynamically induced loads. Problems with bearings, axles and suspension components are introduced, before attention is turned to components below rail level. Vehicle body shells and internal fittings and components are discussed, followed by a brief review of infrastructure problems including bridges, signals and electrical supply components. Some reasons why, despite its long history, fatigue is still a problem, are suggested.
