Because of the high hardness of ceramics and ceramic coatings, very smooth wear surfaces are generated in the run‐in process under certain frictional conditions. In vacuum, tribo‐assisted In coating gives friction coefficient in the range from 0.10 to 0.02 between Si 3 N 4 pins and SUS440C steel disks. In water, friction coefficient in the range from 0.01 to 0.001 is generated between self‐mated Si 3 N 4 and SiC in sliding. In N 2 gas, friction coefficient in the range from 0.01 to 0.001 is generated between Si 3 N 4 ball and CN x coating and between DLC coated ball and DLC coated disk. These low friction coefficients observed with ceramics and without oil are promising new tribo‐technologies for space and environment.
