Abstract Using high energy‐rate implosive techniques, multi‐layered foil and foil mesh reinforced cylinders were manufactured in a range of ordinary engineering alloys based on aluminium, copper and variety of steels. Mechanical Properties of the welded interfaces and of the composites are discussed. Explosive welding of tubular bimetallic transition joints in four different welding systems is discussed together with the effect of the chosen technique on the mechanical properties of the joints.
