Standardised load sequences are presented as a tool for the evaluation of the fatigue strength of materials and components under variable amplitude loading. Requirements which have to be considered for the definition of standardised or reference load sequences and useful applications of these sequences are outlined. The standardised load sequences presently available and under development in Europe are briefly described. Some specific aspects and limitations are discussed at the end of the paper.
