Abstract The laser heat treatment of piston rings is discussed. The hardened layer formed on the surface can increase the wear‐resistance and hence the service life on the piston ring. Compared with rings treated by chromium‐plating or molybdenum‐spraying, the new technique of laser hardening of the piston ring offers many advantages, such as low cost, noble metal saving, no pollution, energy saving, simple working procedure, easy automation production, etc.
