Summary Polyvinyl alcohol based solid electrolyte films are prepared using polyvinyl alcohol and alum by varying wt.% of alum. The synthesized films are characterized by temperature dependent IR, A/C conductivity, temperature dependent dielectric studies, temperature dependent conductance studies, temperature dependent impedance studies, DSC, TGA. The X‐ray diffraction result shows that the crystallinity of PVA is increased upon increasing nano particle into a PVA film. The DSC behaviour of these films, exhibits excellent thermal response upon dispersal of the filler. Solid electrolyte doped with 0.15 wt.% of alum shows optimum AC conductivity of 1.73 × 10 −4  Scm −1 . Dielectric loss studies have also been used to understand the conduction process in the system. The Jonscher power law seems to be obeyed during AC conductivity measurements of the fiber mats.
