Summary The effect of gamma radiation on the structural and functional characteristics of the chitin‐nanosilver membranes for use as wound dressing was evaluated. UV‐Vis, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Raman Spectroscopy were used to evaluate the effect of gamma irradiation on the chitin‐nanosilver membranes. No changes in the spectra of chitin‐nanosilver membranes due to gamma irradiation at 25 kGy were observed. Antimicrobial efficacy of irradiated chitin‐nanosilver membranes against Gram‐negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Gram‐positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and fungal strain Candida albicans was comparable to unirradiated membranes. Impermeability of the chitin‐nanosilver membranes to different microorganisms was also not affected by gamma irradiation.
