Polymer networks have long been the subject of study by chemists, physicists, biologists, material scientists and engineers, aiming to understand the fundamentals of their preparation and behavior, but also to adopt them for a multitude of technologically important applications. This introductory chapter overviews some of this previous knowledge on polymer networks, and also presents recent important developments in the field, as these are detailed in the chapters of this volume.
