Hydro Med Sciences has developed a subcutaneous reservoir hydrogel implant capable of long term delivery of predetermined doses of various active compounds. The implant is a small‐diameter, thin‐walled cylindrical capsule containing a therapeutic agent. The hydrogels used for this application were Hydron* type copolymers of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). These non‐erodible hydrogels are known to be biocompatible, swell reversibly in an aqueous environment, resist biodegradation and do not support microbial growth.
