Recent studies regarding the interphase of silane coupling agents and organic polymer matrices are reviewed with emphasis on its structure and property, and characterization techniques for the interphase. Chemical, physical and physicochemical effects on the formation of silane/matrix interphase and resultant properties are discussed. Improvements of the performance of composite materials are also discussed in relation to the interphase structure. Several representative characterization techniques for interphase are also described.
