A brief survey of biomaterials and of the approaches to modify their surface is given. By means of specific examples of polymers and polymer blends the chemical modification of the surface by means of wet‐chemical processes as well by plasma treatment and the consequences for endothelial cell proliferation, fibronectin adsorption, hydrophilicity, surface tension and zeta‐potential are described. The results are correlated with standard parameters of measuring hemocompatibility and a compatibility window is indicated.
