The polymerization of phenyl vinyl sulfoxide in blocks of increasing enantiomeric excess was carried out. Portions of the polymer were removed after each charge of monomer was consumed. The poly(phenyl vinyl sulfoxide)s were characterized by gel permeation chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Reduction of the poly(phenyl vinyl sulfoxide)s to poly(phenyl vinyl sulfide)s permitted assignment of the polymer stereochemistry and verification that stereogradient polymers were formed.
