Bis(oxazolyl)benzenes and bis(thiazolyl)benzenes containing fluorine atoms and trifluoromethyl groups in the heteroaromatic moieties have been synthesized. These compounds can be used as monomers for the preparation of poly(arylether oxazole)s and poly(arylether thiazole)s with pendent trifluoromethyl groups. The high reactivity of the new oxazole monomers is demonstrated by the synthesis of the corresponding poly(arylene ethers) under extremely mild reaction conditions. The polymers have been characterized by spectroscopical methods, DSC, and dynamic thermogravimetry.
