The technique of oxygen uptake measurement for assessing the photo‐ and thermal stability of polyethylene is reviewed. An oxygen uptake apparatus is described which was used to determine the thermooxidative stabilities of nascent, high‐density polyethylenes produced by Ziegler‐Natta, and silica‐supported “silyl chromate” and “chromocene” catalyst systems. The oxygen uptake results are compared with those obtained from the thermochemical technique of differential scanning calorimetry.
