Some problems in ionic polymerization are reviewed. The existence of a variety of species participating in ionic polymerizations is stressed and the distinction between the growing, dormant, and dead polymers emphasized. An example of a kind of polymer that does not fit any of these three classes is given suggesting that still other examples might be discovered in the future.
