Thermoplastic structural composites offer the designer improved damage tolerance and environmental resistance. They also offer the manufacturer the potential to translate structural composites into a mass production technology. The underpinning materials science to promote that translation is built up from the science of polymer composite product form, composite rheology and morphology, and the control of thermal stability. A range of manufacturing techniques have been developed from conventional thermoset composite processing and from metal technology. A portfolio of applications are currently being developed in the field of medicine, space and aircraft structures, marine and automotive engineering, and industrial machinery.
