Selected examples of industrial blends have been reviewed. In each case specific reference has been made to their functional/economic justification. The area of incompatible blends is identified as the one with significant growth potential and providing the greatest scientific and technological challenge. Key to meeting this challenge is a concerted effort in three distinct areas, i.e. thermodynamics, processing and new compatibilisers.
