Abstract The loss of orientation is a much more rapid phenomenon than the thermal shrinkage of drawn polystyrene, as shown by birefringence and FTIR measurements. The properties imparted by the orientation can be lost before the complete shrinkage occurs. The implications of this fact are discussed.
