The initiation of the polymerization of styrene by AIBN has been studied at 59, 8°C and 69, 9°C, using Galvinoxyl as a free radical scavenger, by spectrophotometric means. Rates of 7×10 −9 and 2×10 −8 mol·1 −1 · s −1 have been measured for the scavengeable free radicals formation in the initiation process of the thermal polymerization of pure styrene, respectively. Values of 6×10 −6 s −1 and 2, 4×10 −5 s −1 have been obtained for the rate constants of production of scavengeable pairs of free radicals (kdf) from AIBN assuming an ideal kinetic scheme.
