In this paper a survey of the actual knowledge on the rate of binary and ternary copolymerizations is given. On the basis of various models of rate equations for binary copolymerizations the classical ternary rate equation of Melville et al. was further developed. New equations were derived for systems characterized by significant viscosity differences between the monomers and the viscosity control of termination is considered. Rate equations presented here were examined by measurements with two monomer systems: styrene/N‐vinyl pyrrolidone/ methylmethacrylate (system I) and diethylmaleate/methylmethacrylate/styrene (system II), both in bulk at 60° C with AIBN as initiator.
