Azobis(isobutyronitrile) and benzoyl peroxide are considered in detail as initiators of radical polymerization; the discussion is extended to other azo compounds and organic peroxides which can be used for the same purpose. Emphasis is placed on the value of isotopic labelling methods for study of the initiators and of the end–groups formed from them.
