The composition of an antioxidant obtained by styrylation of phenol under the catalysis of oxalic acid has been determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and other mass spectroscopic techniques as well as by comparison with authentic samples. It is shown that in addition to the products obtained by styrene addition to the ortho and/or para position of phenol, mentioned in the literature, oligostyrenes, compounds containing more than three styrene units per phenol molecule, and reaction products with urotropin (hexamethylenetetramine) ‐ added as a quencher ‐ are contained in the mixture.
