A review of the role of radiolytic methods in studying the structure and the reactivity of free, unsolvated ions. A concise historical survey is presented of radiolysis in the study of ionic processes in the gas phase. A general outline is reported of the principles of the radiolytic method. Background is provided for comparing radiolysis with other methodologies in gas-phase ion chem. Selected applications of the radiolytic method to ion structure and reactivity problems are given..
