Google did not break the law when it fired an engineer who wrote a memo arguing that women should be paid less and have fewer opportunities at tech companies because they are inferior to men for these jobs. Based on these beliefs, the engineer criticized Google's diversity efforts. The engineer, James Damore, had claimed his speech was protected because it was concerted activity to address a workplace problem.
