Union organizing campaigns are a precursor to union elections or demands for voluntary recognition. Union elections or demands for recognition occur only after a union obtains a strong showing of support among the employees it hopes to organize. After it can demonstrate this support, a union can file an election petition. In some instances, however, unions prefer to bypass a National Labor Relations Board election and seek voluntary recognition through card check.
