All hope is not lost if a unit of employees votes to or already has gone union. Some voted no on the union and still don't want it. Some may become disillusioned with what the union is doing or not doing for them. The union may have sold them pie in the sky and so far it hasn't come through. Plus there are the dues to pay. Over time, the union's majority dwindles until it's gone and the new majority is ready to be rid of it. An employer's legal obligation to recognize and bargain with the union exists only so long as the union enjoys majority support. When it no longer has that, the employer is done with the union.
