The selective carboxylation of 4‐biphenylcarboxylic acid with carbon tetrachloride in aqueous alkali to obtain 4,4′‐biphenyldicarboxylic acid was achieved by the use of ß‐cyclodextrin and copper powder II under mild conditions.
