The spectrum of the infinitesimal generator of the contraction semigroup S ( t ) associated with an abstract version of the integrodifferential equation∂ t t u ( t ) − Δα u ( t ) + ∫ 0 ∞ μ ( s ) [ u ( t ) − u ( t − s ) ]d s = 0 arising from linear viscoelasticity is analyzed. An application to the study of the stability properties of S ( t ) is given.
