We derive a transport equation for the principal symbol of a Fourier integral operator which solves a real principal type system. We apply this to Lamé's system of elastodynamics and obtain transport equations which remain valid at caustics. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
