The moduli space of (1, p )‐polarized abelian surfaces is a quasi‐projective variety. In the case when p is a prime, we want to study its Kodaira dimension. We will show that it is of general type for p > 71 and some smaller values of p . This improves an earlier result of G. K. Sankaran. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
