We show that it is impossible to define a substitution operator for arbitrary representable cylindric algebras that agrees in its basic properties with the notion of substitutions introduced for dimension complemented algebras (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
