Two series of fluorine‐containing liquid crystalline polyesters were synthesized from fluorinated alkylene diols and mesogenic acid dichlorides. The thermal behaviour of the polymers differs considerably from that of their hydrocarbon analogues. Formation of a nematic phase was observed only for melts of polymers with fluorinated spacers whereas polymers with alkylene spacers form mainly smectic phases. The most interesting feature is the unusual dependence of the polymer melting temperature on the spacer length — it increases with increasing number of CF 2 groups in the spacer.
