The influence of heat treatments on the stress corrosion cracking susceptibility (SCC) of industrially drawn 7075 wires was investigated in 2 wt% NaCl solution at a pH of 3. The T4 treated material showed the highest susceptibility, whereas the T6 treated alloy showed a reduced sensitivity to SCC. Over‐aging was found to reduce SCC susceptibility most effectively. The high susceptibility of the T4 treated material was proposed to be a result of the strong intergranular corrosion attack during testing, reducing the loaded cross‐section of the tensile specimen and increasing the stress level. The fatal crack formation is proposed to be a result of hydrogen embrittlement by the evolved hydrogen.
