Qualification of NICROFER 3127 LC for the Preconcentration of phosphoric acid

After practice‐related corrosion tests in both laboratory and pilot plant as well as in consideration of corrosion data already available, the FeNiCrMoCu alloy NICROFER® 3127 LC NICROFER® and CRONIFER® are registered trademarks of VDM Nickel‐Technologie AG, D‐5980 Werdohl. could be qualified within a very short time as an alternative for graphite heat exchangers for preconcentrating phosphoric acid. The corrosion rates of this alloy in a 26 to 52 wt.%, halidecontaining phosphoric acid solution at temperatures up to 80 °C are distinctly below 0.1 mm/year. Welding, e.g. by the Plasma‐GMAW or GTAW Process does not adversely affect the corrosion resistance. A fully metallic heat exchanger used for preconcentrating phosphoric acid has proven its value in nearly two years' operation, showing an integral corrosion rate of less than 0.1 mm/year. Starting from this experience, further plant components are being designed or under construction. Two reconstructed plants have been in operation since April 1988.
