After practice‐related corrosion tests in both laboratory and pilot plant as well as in consideration of corrosion data already available, the FeNiCrMoCu alloy NICROFER® 3127 LC NICROFER® and CRONIFER® are registered trademarks of VDM Nickel‐Technologie AG, D‐5980 Werdohl. could be qualified within a very short time as an alternative for graphite heat exchangers for preconcentrating phosphoric acid. The corrosion rates of this alloy in a 26 to 52 wt.%, halidecontaining phosphoric acid solution at temperatures up to 80 °C are distinctly below 0.1 mm/year. Welding, e.g. by the Plasma‐GMAW or GTAW Process does not adversely affect the corrosion resistance. A fully metallic heat exchanger used for preconcentrating phosphoric acid has proven its value in nearly two years' operation, showing an integral corrosion rate of less than 0.1 mm/year. Starting from this experience, further plant components are being designed or under construction. Two reconstructed plants have been in operation since April 1988.
