A pilot plant with a revolving cylindrical furnace for the gasification of organic waste at temperatures between 600 and 800°C was operated in 1976/78. The furnace wall was made of a 25 Cr/20 Ni steel. After 3000 h operation the total damage by external and internal corrosion was about 1.0 to 1.2 mm. The carbon black layer, deposited on the inner furnace wall, obviously acts as a barrier layer.
