The application of photoelectrochemistry for the micro‐characterization and the study of passive films under corroding and non‐corroding conditions is described. The various factors which influence the signal recorded in the PhotoElectroChemical Laser Imaging (PECLI) technique are discussed. In particular, the influence of parameters such as absorption coefficient, reflectivity, composition, structural properties and thickness of the passive film are considered. The application of the technique is demonstrated with examples of images of corroded surfaces, corroding surfaces and of a non‐corroding alloy.
