The beginning of crevice corrosion of titanium and AISI 304 in acid solution was investigated experimentally. In addition, the current and potential distributions along the crevices were determined by numerical integration of the differential equation that describes the phenomenon. The experimental results agree satisfactorily with those obtained by calculation and confirm the assumptions introduced in the schematization of the phenomenon. However, long time experiments revealed a progressive deviation of the experimental results from the calculated ones, in the opposite direction for AISI 304 and titanium. Thus, in the first case, following a time that seems to be independent of the potential imposed upon the free surface, the entire surface within the crevice becomes gradually passivated. In contrast, in the case of Titanium the corrosion behaviour of the area within the crevice reaches a steady state.
